3 Reasons you overeat—and how to stop!

GymBuddiez | June 30, 2009

Last week I walked by my office printer, a popular landing spot for extra food, and grabbed what I thought was a cookie. It was more of a cookie/energy bar hybrid, and while it wasn’t awful, it wasn’t great either, and definitely not worth the calories. But I ate it anyway. Why? It was in my…

User Post: Have you gained weight since your wedding?

Jessica Ashley, Shine staff |
When you look back at your wedding photos, the last thing on your mind should be the size of your gown in comparison to your current dress size.

However, if your honeymoon jeans feel a little snug and the idea of zippering up that gown again makes your stomach weak, you're not alone.…

Binge-proof your diet: 6 Foods that keep you full and satisfied

GymBuddiez |

The big, fat (pun intended) irony about trying to drop pounds is that cutting calories has a pesky habit of making you eat more, and more of the wrong types of foods. Think about the last time you nibbled a plain green salad for lunch. How did you feel by 6 pm? Ready to eat an…

The return of the old-fashioned fertility treatment: Daily sex could be the key

GymBuddiez |
Remember back in the old days when the treatment for infertility was thought to be simply having a lot of sex? Those days seem to be back.

This time around, though, the reasoning is not just that the more you do it, the more sperm will make their way to the waiting egg, and the more likely you will be to conceive.

Prevent injury with these dynamic warm-up moves!

GymBuddiez |
DSCN0086.JPGAt yesterday's soccer game our players were dropping like flies. We had a knee injury, a pulled hamstring, and a rolled ankle. Thankfully most of the injuries were minor, but for me they were a reminder that my pregame warm-up (talking and touching my toes) needs to be revamped! Dynamic warm-ups (exercises that get you prepped to move for your activity) are key. Here are a few moves that I'll be doing pre-game on Wednesday.

Xtend: A cool new dance workout that kicked my butt!

Jessica Ashley, Shine staff |
http://www.showworks.com.au/images/showworkscomau/Images/ballet%20barre%20detail%20in%20pink2.jpegDid you ever dream of being a ballerina when you were growing up? I did! I was enrolled in ballet classes when I was three or four years old, but the dream was short-lived. My parents were told one day to never bring me back: I had spent a large part of class chasing the poor teacher around the room and threatening to “suck her blood.” Yikes! Thankfully, I’ve stopped issuing such vampirish threats, but I secretly still want to be a ballerina--or to at least have a ballerina’s effortless grace. And who doesn’t want a body like that? That’s why I was so thrilled recently when I tried out a new Pilates/ballet barre workout called Xtend at Renaissance Pilates, a really cool studio across the Hudson in Hoboken, NJ. I kid you not when I tell you this dance workout kicked my butt.

User Post: A sweet and healthy breakfast

Jessica Ashley, Shine staff |
strawberry-buckwheat-muffins

Are you a sweet or savory breakfast person? My default setting is definitely savory, and I’m much more apt to order a farmer’s omelet than the French toast. But sometimes, after weeks of diurnal eggs, I get a hankering for something with a taste of sugar.

These…

How to eat clean: Avoid detox diet and still eat clean with these helpful tips!

http://www.bonappetit.com/images/tips_tools_ingredients/ingredients/2008/10/ttar_white_sugar_h.jpgRefined sugar gets a bad rap for a reason.

By Carin Gorrell, From the July 2009 Issue

Unless you're prepping for a colonoscopy, we don't advise shunning food in favor of downing copious amounts of gross liquids. That said, there are health benefits to "eating clean," says SELF contributing editor Joy Bauer, R.D. She means opting for foods that are naturally free of man-made stuff but full of good-for-you nutrients that keep your body systems humming along. Follow her healthy one-week diet, and you may even drop some weight along the way. Get started with these simple steps, then try an enticing one-week menu.

Are you worried enough about swine flu?

GymBuddiez |
I wasn't. Even when flu alerts first began to fly, I wrote, reported, and spoke on the radio about how we could take care of ourselves during the outbreak and why it was best not to panic.

"Wash your hands, get plenty of rest, don't share Kleenex," I said, echoing the CDC and other medical experts who essentially told us what we (should) do to avoid any other flu.

User Post: Small bites for better health

Jessica Ashley, Shine staff |

My grandma used to say, “Eat slowly, with small bites, so that you digest your food.” She was partly right.

Unfortunately for us, we humans are quite efficient at digesting our food regardless of how quickly we eat it. Whether we chew well or not, our bodies will still extract…

Jessica Ashley, Shine staff | June 26, 2009

I cannot believe that we have lost two great talents in one day. One sits and stares silently and helplessly at the screen, while someone reports the cold, hard truth. To lose someone so universally loved, so "always" in the spotlight, is tough for all. For years, they have intertwined…

While it's exciting to get the kudos, it's especially gratifying to see the media shine a light on an issue that affects millions of women: disordered eating.
