Would you nap every day if you could get away with it?

GymBuddiez | July 31, 2009
When I tell people that I work at home, they often react by asking if I take a nap every day. This makes me laugh. I guess I could take a nap. But my reality is quite…

Are You Skimping On Healthcare Because It's So Darn Expensive?

Jessica Ashley, Shine staff |

Some scary stats: A recent survey from the Kaiser Family Foundation found that, because of cost

  • 35 percent of people polled were relying on home remedies or taking over-the-counter meds instead of visiting the doctor

  • 23 percent skipped a recommended treatment or test, and

  • 21 percent didn’t fill a prescription
I have health insurance through Rory’s work, but because we have to pay a $2,000 deductible (meaning, we pay full-price for everything health-care related right now), I’m spending around $250 on every doctor’s appointment and more than $150 on some prescriptions. I definitely thought twice about every allergy pill I took this summer, and have probably waited a little longer between office visits than usual. ($250 is a lot of money!)

But forgoing the insurance (like 13 million young Americans are right now!) isn’t worth the extra money in Rory’s paycheck: People who don’t have health insurance are paying those prices (and more), plus, if they need emergency care (for, say, a broken bone) or develop chronic a illness (like diabetes) they could rack up tens of thousands of dollars in medical bills in a matter of months.

One more reason to ogle Olympians: The tattoos they choose

GymBuddiez |
I am in awe of Olympic athletes. And not just Shawn Johnson and Dara Torres and Michelle Kwan and Michael Phelps. I am astounded by the athletes with names we may never know, marching in the opening ceremonies in their crazy uniforms and filing toward the starting line without the same recognition or Bob Costas (sigh...love) human interest piece featuring their life story leading up to that moment.

Nap time is not the new happy hour: Thank you, Rachael Brownell

GymBuddiez |

by Stefanie Wilder-Taylor (Make Mine A Double)

On May 22nd I made the humbling and, hopefully, permanent decision to give up the hooch. Up until fairly recently, I really liked to drink. Scratch that – loved to drink. My favorite sound? The cork popping out of a bottle of chilled pinot grigio signaling my day coming to a close. But like a junior high school BFF, alcohol turned on me and we became bitter frenemies forcing me to avoid it at parties and not return its phone calls. I didn’t want it to end that way, but alcohol was negatively affecting my overall happiness and standing in the way of my ability to parent my children and be the best wife I could be.
